Water Source

The District operates four (4) water plants, with an aggregate well capacity of 5.1 million gallons per day (MGD), that include associated ground storage, elevated storage, and booster pumps.  The current water demand is approximately 4.0 MGD.

Phase II of the Lebon Water Plant Expansion has been completed, which includes a 2.0 MG ground storage tank, 20,000 gallon hydro tank, and booster pumps.  In addition to the existing water service infrastructure, the District will be adding a 1.0 million gallon (MG) elevated storage tower by 2003.  This will be followed by the construction of one (1) additional water plant to meet the demand of the growth within the District.

At the present time, Fort Bend Subsidence District (FBSD) has no surface water conversion mandates for the District.  The projected mandates will include 30% ground water reduction (GWR) by the year 2010, 70% GWR by the year 2020 and 80% GWR by the year 2030.

The District began preparing for surface water conversion in 1985 by participating in a surface water study with the City of Sugar Land.  The District has a contract with the Gulf Coast Water Authority (GCWA) for 10.0 MGD (80% of the District’s ultimate water requirements) of surface water.

The District has purchased an 80-acre site south of GCWA’s canal and west of Stafford Run Creek for the purpose of constructing a surface water treatment plant (SWTP).  The District is a participant in a regional surface water study conducted by the GCWA that concluded the District’s 80-acre site was the best location for a 150 MGD SWTP needed to serve portion of west Harris County, City of Sugar Land, City of Missouri City, City of Arcola, City of Pearland, City of Alvin, City of Manvel, City of Friendswood, and the area within the boundaries of Fort Bend County WC&ID No. 2, which includes the City of Stafford.

The District is presently conducting independent studies to determine the feasibility of constructing an independent surface water treatment plant needed to serve the Fort Bend County WC&ID No. 2 versus participation in a regional facility.

By preparing for surface water conversion, the District has positioned itself as a leader in the surface water conversion of Fort Bend County.
